Tiger Woods makes yet another clutch putt, this time on the 18th hole for birdie and to force a playoff with Rocco Mediate at the 108th US Open at Torrey Pines.

Yeah thats called break. In golf you have to read the break of a putt by looking at the contours on the green. It takes skill to be a good reader so that you can know which direction the ball is going to “curl”.

Tiger is great no doubt but the putts never seem to lip out they curl in like the chip at the masters and that putt

For the 3 clowns who wrote to me:
1) See you piece of little **** GOLFmanic, if I wrote to you some of my mail, because it was dolió what I said because it hurts to tell the truth.
Surely you must be some foul blacks (as) of shit, and that is why defend this woods trash. If it is not, it is certain that you must be some foul homosexuals, and that’s why he defends this foul of black woods.

Tiger is unstoppable! His concentration and devotion to the game are second to none. (In this era I might add)

that is the greatest putt ive ever seen

Yup. The experts point to the fact that the field is actually much deeper during this stage of the Tiger era than it ever was during Jack’s reign. Skillwise, I’d say yes but I’m more curious about the part that matters most: mental toughness. One thing is to have someone blow the rest of the field out to the water by 8 or 10 shots but it’s another when that person can snatch away a victory almost at will. Like his dad said, he will never meet anyone as mentally tough as he is.

the guy won that major on one leg, greatest thing i’ve ever seen…..why don’t any other golfer’s worst tourneys get brought up? He’s had bad tourneys but he rebounded and will SHATTER Jack’s record for most majors

Okay, his dad died and that was the first tourny back from that!! He said it was hard to focus on fundamentals because his dad taught him the fundamentals! That one should have an * by it!

It wasn’t embarassing at all, we all know why he struggled that week. I did look on the results page and actually the lowest he finished as a professional wat T39, which is hardly way down the leaderboard.

SmallDanny,
Go to wikipedia and find Tiger Woods. Once on Woods Wikipedia page, scroll down to “Results Page.” There are loads of majors where Woods finished way out of the Top 10 in those tournaments.
So, to answer your question, there are numerous times when Woods was out of the picture early in a Major. He even missed the cut in the 06 U.S. Open. How embarassing.

When was the last time Woods finished way back on the leader board exactly? I think you will struggle to find any evidence to back up that claim about his putting.
His putter was “stone cold” in a few majors in recent years and he didn’t do too bad. Masters 2008,US Open 2007, Masters 2006. In those he had two second places and one third.

The only reason you could argue that Jack had more competition, is that the scores reflected competition. 18 Major wins and something like 19 2nd places for Jack. Just because Tiger absolutely dominates majors, doesn’t mean the opposition is weaker now than it was in the past. That’s a pretty weak argument. Tiger is the best athlete alive, and arguably the best athlete to ever walk Earth.

I love Dan Hicks’ call.
“Expect anything different?”
Rocco Mediate’s reaction was priceless, too.
“Unbelievable. I knew he’d make it.”

The point is there aren’t twelve players who have a chance in each major tournament because there is so much more depth and talent, meaning there are more players that have a good chance in each tournament, meaning its more difficult for a player to have a chance in every major.

Dear SmallDanny,
Good post, but I’m not sure there are a dozen players who have a chance to win in each major tournament nowadays. If there are, who are they and when did they win a major tournament? In theory, everyone has a chance to win a major, but I don’t believe Woods faces a gauntlet of a dozen proven serious contenders at every major tournament. Jack had a tougher field for a longer period than Woods has had.
I’d love a 72-hole match between Tiger, Jack and Arnie in their prime.
